Description
Life-line
In maritime terminology, a life-line is an auxiliary rope used with a pilot ladder or embarkation ladder.
Its purpose:
-
First of all, the crew place life-lines on both sides of the pilot ladder.
-
As a result, climbers get extra support and stay safe while going up or down.
-
Furthermore, they grip the ropes to keep their balance. This is crucial when the ladder and pilot boat move with the waves.
-
In addition, the crew use life-lines with embarkation ladders during emergencies.
SOLAS (Safety of Life at Sea) rules:
-
To begin with, the crew keep life-lines strong and in good condition.
-
Moreover, they fix them securely and position them on both sides of the ladder.
-
Finally, they make sure the ropes reach the water level. This allows safe access from the boat.
